تصنَّف شبكات الحاسوب أولاً بحسب المنطقة التي تغطيها. شبكة المنطقة الواسعة (WAN) تمتد عبر بلدة أو بلد أو العالم، وتشغّلها عادةً شركات اتصالات مثل مجموعة اتصالات الأردن. كانت تُبنى قديماً على شبكة الهاتف السلكية، وأصبحت تُنشأ أيضاً عبر شبكات الهاتف المحمول. تمثّل شبكات المنطقة الواسعة أساس الإنترنت، وهي في الغالب شبكات عامة يُشارك نقل البيانات فيها بين الأفراد والشركات. أما المؤسسات الكبيرة والجهات الحكومية فقد تُعدّ شبكة منطقة واسعة خاصة بها للاستخدام الحصري. الشبكة الشخصية شبكة لاسلكية قصيرة المدى، بضعة أمتار في العادة، وأشهر أمثلتها ربط هاتف محمول بسماعات أذن. شبكة التخزين نوع خاص يضم أقراص تخزين وأجهزة نسخ احتياطي تُشارك بين خوادم متعددة، وتظهر غالباً في مراكز البيانات لأنها توفّر تخزيناً مشتركاً عالي السرعة. عندما تمر اتصالات شبكة المنطقة الواسعة عبر الإنترنت فإنها تستخدم شبكة عامة مشتركة، فيمكن اعتراض البيانات. تنشئ الشبكة الافتراضية الخاصة نفقاً افتراضياً على الإنترنت لحماية النقل. تستخدمها المؤسسات ليصل موظفو المبيعات أو فنيو الإصلاح إلى الأنظمة الداخلية من المنزل أو موقع العميل أو الفندق.
