بدأ الدرس من حقيقة الاستخلاف: خلق الله تعالى الإنسان واستخلفه في الأرض، وكرمه وميزه عن سائر المخلوقات، ثم كلفه بإعمارها. وعمارة الأرض هي السعي في الأرض لاستثمار الخيرات التي أودعها الله في الكون، بما يحقق للإنسان الحياة الطيبة والفوز في الآخرة. لذلك تشمل العمارة فعلًا ماديًا مثل الزراعة والبناء وتطوير الصناعات والابتكارات التقنية، وتشمل فعلًا معنويًا مثل التعليم ونشر القيم الأخلاقية وإقامة العدل وإفشاء السلام في المجتمع. أهميتها أنها ضرورة إنسانية واجتماعية؛ فمصالح الناس وسعادتهم لا تستقيم إلا بها، وهي سبيل إلى مجتمع إنساني سليم وحضارة راقية. والإسلام يجعلها وسيلة للتمكين في الأرض وعبادة يتقرب بها الإنسان إلى الله، فلا تكون الدنيا غاية منفصلة عن الآخرة، بل ميدانًا للعمل الصالح. ومن هنا يفهم حديث غرس الفسيلة عند قيام الساعة: قيمة العمل النافع ثابتة حتى في أضيق اللحظات.
