يمهد الكتاب بأن للإسلام موقفا إيجابيا من الأنشطة البشرية التي تعبر عن ارتباط الإنسان بالمظاهر الجمالية في الكون، لما لها من آثار نفسية وأخلاقية في حياة الفرد والمجتمع. وقد ظهرت آثار أسماء الله وصفاته في خلقه، مثل الخالق والبارئ والمصور والبديع؛ فهو سبحانه يخلق الأشياء من العدم ويوجدها على الصفة التي يريدها في منتهى الجمال والإبداع والإتقان. ويعرف الدرس الجمال بأنه الحسن والبهاء في الأشياء المادية والمعنوية الذي يبعث في النفس السرور والبهجة والرضا. وحب الجمال والارتياح له فطرة في الإنسان خلقه الله عليها، والله جميل يحب الجمال في الأقوال والأفعال واللباس والهيئة. لذلك أباح الله للإنسان أن يتمتع بجمال ما أودعه في الكون بالطرق المشروعة، واعتنى المسلمون بفنون تعبر عن الإحساس بالجمال مثل الخط والنقش والزخرفة والعمارة وتجويد القرآن والشعر والخطابة والأناشيد.
