The topic explained

Add question tags to the sentences.

Period 3 / Language and vocabulary study

Direct questions: where does the subject go?

1 Look at the examples of direct questions and reported or indirect questions. Then circle the correct words to complete the grammar rules.

The first box shows direct questions; the rules ask about their word order and purpose.

Reported questions: complete the rules

The second box shows reported questions; the bold words are what the rules are about.

Report the six questions

Apply the rules: write each direct question as a reported question after the words given.

Who or what: subject or object?

3 Look at the examples. Then complete the grammar rules by adding subject or object.

In each sentence, one question asks about the subject and the other asks about the object.

Write a question for each answer

Read the situation, then decide which part of the story each short answer replaces.

Period 4 / Language and vocabulary study

Negative questions: what does the speaker mean?

1 Compare the examples. Then answer the questions.

Each pair is one positive and one negative question; the negative ones add a comment in brackets.

Match the negative questions with their meanings

2 Match the negative questions with their suggested meanings.

Question tags: complete the rules

3 Look at the examples of question tags. Then complete the rules.

In each example the bold words are the verb part of the sentence and the tag that follows it.

Add the question tags

Use the three rules to choose the tag that fits each of the ten sentences.

Word + preposition: complete the sentences

5 Look at the example. Then complete the sentences with a word and preposition from the boxes.

The first sentence is done for you; its two words are crossed out in the boxes.
