Question Number 1 · Reading ComprehensionA)

Read the following text and do the tasks below:

It used to be thought that friendship was something that ‘just happened’ between people. However, many studies by social scientists have shown that becoming friends with another person is a complex process, but one that can be learnt. Making (and keeping) friends isn’t easy – it takes effort. Here are the top five tips for turning someone you know into a lasting friend. 1\.…… Everyone has acquaintances – people we know, but who aren’t (yet) friends. To take your relationship further than just discussing the weather, you need to show an interest in their lives. Ask them questions (but don’t get too personal at first). Even more importantly, listen to their answers and remember the information for the next time you meet. 2\. Don’t let one mistake get in the way Maybe you made a joke that annoyed your new friend, or forgot to call when you promised to. It’s almost inevitable that something will go wrong at some point, but it’s how you react to the situation that may be more important than the initial error. An honest apology and making the effort not to let it happen again are usually all that’s needed. 3\.…… When making arrangements, there are two opposite ways of behaving that can harm a friendship. The first is forcing the other person to make all the decisions by saying things like ‘I don’t mind, you choose’ or ‘Whatever you want’. The other is being too particular and inflexible about what you want to happen, or where, or when. Try to find a middle way between the two extremes. 4\.…… It’s understandable that you want to impress a new friend and make them aware of your good points, but don’t go too far. Research shows that most of us tend to like people who don’t boast about their achievements or take themselves too seriously. 5\.…… If someone tells you something ‘in confidence’, it means just that – they are confident that you won’t tell anyone else. In other words, they trust you. If you then pass on this information to another person, that trust is broken. Even if your friend doesn’t find out what you’ve done, this kind of behaviour can easily destroy a friendship over time.

It’s important to take your time and make sure that you fill in all the details concerning planning, making key financial decisions and completing a series of legal activities. The following four steps can help you plan, prepare and manage your business. 1\. ……:You should study the market in order to learn about the goods and services that are required by consumers. This factor is the crucial one. When you discover that people demand an item but no one has produced it yet, you have the best chances to conquer the chosen sector of the market. 2\. ……:Then, you should create your own business plan that will contain the entire information about running your business. Your business plan is a road map that shows you how money should be spent. It’s also how you’ll prove to investors and funders that you’ve thought things through. 3\. ……:You need a support system while you are starting a business and afterwards. A family member or a friend that you can discuss ideas with and who will listen to the latest business startup crises is invaluable. When you are starting a business, experienced guidance is the best support system of all. 4\. ……:70% of startups fail because their founders invest in growth too soon. Circle the correct answer:

There is no way to be safe in your career unless there is (job opportunity / job security).

اعرض الحل

الإجابة الصحيحة: ب) job security

The book explains job security as being sure that you won't lose your job, which is exactly what is needed to feel safe in a career. Job opportunity is about chances of finding work, not keeping it.

Circle the correct answer:

My father has been (in business /on business) for twenty-five years without feeling bored.

اعرض الحل

الإجابة الصحيحة: أ) in business

The book explains that in business means working in the business field, as in 'She has been in business since she left school.' The speaker's father has been working in the field for years, so in business is right; on business means a trip for business reasons.

C)

Choose the correct answer:

The weather forecast says it's (raining / going to rain), there are many black clouds in the sky.

اعرض الحل

الإجابة الصحيحة: ب) going to rain

The book says we use going to when we have some evidence to make us certain about the future. The black clouds are the evidence, so 'going to rain' is right, as in the book's 'It’s going to fall over one day.'

Choose the correct answer:

She's better than her colleagues, so she (may well / may not) lose the competition.

اعرض الحل

الإجابة الصحيحة: ب) may not

Because she is better than her colleagues, losing is unlikely. The book says adding well makes could, might or may more certain, so 'may well lose' would mean she will probably lose, which contradicts the sentence. 'May not lose' fits.

Choose the correct answer:

Where would you like me. (putting / to put) these books?

اعرض الحل

الإجابة الصحيحة: ب) to put

The book says that when an object is needed, it goes between the verb and the infinitive. Here me is the object after would like, so the infinitive with to (to put) follows. The -ing form is used after prepositions.

Choose the correct answer:

I remembered (meeting / to meet) her during the previous ceremony.

اعرض الحل

الإجابة الصحيحة: أ) meeting

The book says that after remember, the -ing form is used for remembering actions that happened in the past, as in 'I remember feeling stressed'. Meeting her at the previous ceremony is a past event, so 'meeting' is right.
