Question Number 1 · Reading comprehensionA)

Read the text and do the tasks below:

It isn’t hard to explain why parents, teachers and older people in general get so concerned about the negative effects of young people’s use of communications technology. They may be motivated by a wish to protect their children from harm or to control them, but throughout history older generations have always tried to put limits on the behaviour of the young. The Internet today is such a powerful force, and older people generally don’t really understand this new world of social media and instant communication, so they’re unable to control it. In a similar way, governments, even in democratic countries, like to put limits on people’s behaviour. They may have more technological knowledge than the average parent, but the spread of social media sites and communications apps like Twitter and WhatsApp is making it harder and harder for them to control what their citizens are saying and doing. Clearly, this isn’t always a positive trend, but what we can say for sure is that new information and communications technologies are a force for social change and economic development, especially in poorer countries without a reliable traditional phone network. The World Bank has calculated that in countries like this, a 10% increase in high-speed Internet connections leads to a 1.3% increase in economic growth. It is, they say, ‘the single most powerful way to extend economic opportunities and services to millions of people, especially in remote areas’. A recent article published on the BBC website showed how young Palestinians are starting small technology companies that could help the Palestinian economy to break free from the restrictions placed on it by the Israeli occupation. As one interviewee explains: ‘What is good about technology is that it breaks the borders. A person with a laptop can work in the worst situations; he can work from his home and interact with the global community, without a passport and despite the occupation. It is limitless.’

Circle the correct answer:

I doubt I'll ever get rich, but I get what is more important that is (job prospect/job satisfaction).

اعرض الحل

الإجابة الصحيحة: ب) job satisfaction

The charity worker in the book says job satisfaction is why people would rather help others than work for a company making money. That matches something more important than getting rich. Job prospects are about future chances, not this feeling.

Circle the correct answer:

He died (on arrival /on request) at the nearby hospital.

اعرض الإجابة

الإجابة الصحيحة: أ) on arrival

Circle the correct answer:

We need to stop this (takeover/take over) of our business by a larger company.

اعرض الحل

الإجابة الصحيحة: أ) takeover

The book says take over means to get control and tells students to join such verbs into one-word nouns, so the noun is takeover. After 'this' we need a noun, not the two-word verb 'take over'.

Circle the correct answer:

Her husband is a good man but I think they no longer have anything (in /on) common.

اعرض الإجابة

الإجابة الصحيحة: أ) in

Circle the correct answer:

The manager suggests doing (market share /market research) to find out what local offices need.

اعرض الحل

الإجابة الصحيحة: ب) market research

The book describes working out who your potential customers and competitors are as market research, and its definition task says it is what you do to find out if people will buy your product. Finding out what local offices need is that same kind of research. Market share only tells you how much of the market you have compared with your competitors.

D)

Circle the correct answer:

I think the headmaster is (going to delay / delaying) the journey. The weather is terrible outside.

اعرض الحل

الإجابة الصحيحة: أ) going to delay

The book says we use going to when we have some evidence to make us certain about the future. The terrible weather is the evidence that the headmaster will delay the journey, so 'going to delay' is right.

Circle the correct answer:

His handwriting was unclear so his professor (might well / might not) understand it.

  1. أ

    might well

  2. ب

    might not

Circle the correct answer:

I'm lucky! This problem (will probably/ probably won't) take much time to be solved.

⁦Choose the correct answer⁩:

⁦Although we were in a hurry, we⁩ ⁦stopped (⁩⁦helping / to help⁩) ⁦those whose car broke down⁩.

اعرض الحل

الإجابة الصحيحة: ب) to help

The book shows that stop + to + verb means stopping one action in order to do another. They paused their journey to help those whose car broke down, so 'to help' is correct; 'helping' would mean they simply stopped helping.
