Question Number 1 · Reading ComprehensionA)

Read the following text carefully and complete the tasks below: Your comfort zone is, as the name suggests, the area where you feel comfortable. We all have one, whether we know it or not: it's the set of routines and known abilities that make us feel safe because we're confident that we can manage and are unlikely to be challenged by anything unexpected or worrying. Obviously, staying inside your comfort zone has many benefits, especially at times when you're feeling under stress. On the other hand, we're often told in 'self-help' books that it's a good idea to do things that are outside our comfort zones. In fact, many studies have shown that an important factor in helping people feel positive about themselves is the feeling that they are developing and making progress in their lives. You won't reach your full potential if you only do what you know you are able to do. We all want to improve ourselves, for example by learning something new, becoming more creative or getting fit. Unfortunately, people often get stuck in their comfort zones and don't feel able to try different things. There are various possible reasons for this. They may be afraid of failing or unsure how to begin. Many people think 'This is the way I am and I'll never change', using this as an excuse for not trying something new. Whatever the reason may be, it's sometimes necessary to force yourself to do something you'd rather not do. Once you've made the effort, though, the door to new experiences will be open and you'll probably wonder why you thought it was a problem.

Complete the table with the reasons for each statement:

Question Number 2 · Reading ComprehensionA)

Read the text about (The world of work) and do the tasks below: Many young people have a dream job that they hope to achieve in the future. In today's world of work, some of the most popular career choices include becoming an IT programmer, a doctor, or a graphic designer. These careers attract young people because they offer good career prospects, opportunities for creativity, and financial stability. At the same time, each job comes with its own disadvantages, which must also be considered. One of the most in-demand careers today is that of an IT programmer, who creates software, websites, and applications. This job is highly rewarding, as technology continues to grow, making IT programming a job with strong employment opportunities. However, being IT programmers means spending long hours in front of screens, some health problems and finally the field requires constant learning. A doctor is another common career choice, as it allows people to help others while earning a high income. Although becoming a doctor requires many years of study, the effort is worth it due to the respect and stability the job offers. On the other hand, doctors face high levels of responsibility and must handle stressful situations, such as life-and-death decisions. A graphic designer, on the other hand, is perfect for creative individuals who enjoy working on artistic projects. Even though some graphic designers may have a low income when starting, their earnings can increase as they gain experience. However, the field is highly competitive, and many designers struggle to find stable jobs. Choosing a career is not just about passion but also about being able to make a living. Some people follow their fantasy jobs without considering financial stability, which may lead to disappointment. Others neglect their true interests and choose jobs only for the money. The best option is to find a balance between passion, job security, and financial success. With careful planning and dedication, young people can achieve their dream job and build a successful future.

(Job application / Job security) is the key factor for many employees when deciding whether to stay with a company or seek new opportunities.

اعرض الحل

الإجابة الصحيحة: ب) Job security

The book explains job security as being sure that you won’t lose your job, which is why it is a key factor in deciding to stay with a company. A job application is only the form you send to get a job.

Circle the correct answer:

Did you leave the door open (on purpose / on demand) or was it a mistake?

اعرض الحل

الإجابة الصحيحة: أ) on purpose

‘On purpose’ means deliberately: the book has ‘I don’t believe it was an accident. I think he did it on purpose.’ Leaving a door open deliberately versus by mistake fits ‘on purpose’.

Circle the correct answer:

The (breakthrough / break through) in technology allowed the team to create a distinct new app.

اعرض الحل

الإجابة الصحيحة: أ) breakthrough

The book joins phrasal verbs into one-word nouns, and asks about the link between break through and the noun a breakthrough, as in ‘His big breakthrough came when he attended a start-up weekend’. After ‘The’, the sentence needs the noun, written as one word.

Circle the correct answer:

The hotel is (marketing / upmarket). It provides five-star exclusive services.

اعرض الحل

الإجابة الصحيحة: ب) upmarket

The book defines "upmarket" as describing a more expensive luxury item. A five-star hotel with exclusive services is luxury, whereas "marketing" is a way of letting people know about a product.

Circle the correct answer:

(In / On) request, the restaurant will prepare vegetarian options for customers with dietary restrictions.

اعرض الحل

الإجابة الصحيحة: ب) On

The book teaches the phrase "on request" for when someone asks, as in "We will be pleased to send you more details on request". The restaurant prepares vegetarian options when customers ask, so the preposition is "on".

B)

Circle the correct answer:

You can go. I don't mind (to be / being) alone.

اعرض الحل

الإجابة الصحيحة: ب) being

Mind is one of the verbs the book groups with the -ing form, in the same exercise as give up, avoid and keep. The rule is that the -ing form follows certain verbs like enjoy and like, so "I don’t mind being alone" is right.

Circle the correct answer:

The hikers were exhausted, yet they stopped (to take / taking) some pictures.

اعرض الحل

الإجابة الصحيحة: أ) to take

Stop + to + infinitive means stopping one action in order to do another. The hikers stopped walking in order to take pictures, so "to take" is right; "taking" would mean they stopped doing the picture-taking.

Circle the correct answer:

When she got home yesterday, she found some flowers. Her husband (must buy / must have bought) them.
