Question Number 1 · Reading ComprehensionA)

Read the following text carefully and complete the tasks below: ( A ) There are limits to how many sports can be included in the Olympic Games. In the 2012 Summer Games, there were 26, and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) have added two more for 2016 (golf and rugby sevens). There are various criteria that the IOC bases its decisions on, but the most important is probably international popularity. Sports tend to get included if they have a tradition and are played and watched by enough people in enough countries. ( B ) This leads to some interesting questions. Why, for example, was baseball included from 1984, but then dropped for 2012? Although some think it is only popular in the USA, it actually has a large following in South America and Asia too. The main reason for leaving it out, according to some, is a combination of geography and politics: there is little interest in the sport in Europe, and European members are in a majority on the IOC. ( C ) Of the other sports not (yet) included, one that stands out is squash. It has a long tradition and is played all over the world. It's also more obviously a real sport than some other Olympic 'sports'. In fact, it's more mysterious why certain sports are included. Take speed walking, for example, a long-standing Olympic regular. The rules say that the athletes have to have both feet in contact with the ground at all times, and must keep their legs straight. The result, to me at least, looks very silly. ( D ) More importantly, it breaks one of my two personal rules for judging serious sports because it puts artificial limits on what can be done. This is why I can't take any sport seriously if it involves doing something in water that is more naturally done out of water. My other rule is that the scoring has to be objective and measurable, not a matter of opinion. And of course both of these criteria would rule out everyone's favourite example of an Olympic non-sport: synchronised swimming.

Question Number 2 · Reading ComprehensionA)

Read the text and do the tasks below: Young people today, often referred to as "the connected generation," depend heavily on technology for communication. A recent study shows that 85% of individuals aged 18-29 use smartphones as their main tool for staying connected. This dependence on technology is reflected in their communication habits, with 72% preferring texting over face-to-face interactions and 65% engaging with social media daily to stay updated with friends and family. Video calls have also become a common method, with many young people using platforms and sites weekly. Additionally, 50% of young people in the study mentioned that group chats have become an essential part of their work and academic conversations. These numbers highlight a growing trend where online interactions control how this generation connects. However, the study also reveals some disadvantages. Around 60% of respondents reported feeling addicted to their devices, with many describing the constant need to check notifications and comments as noisy. Additionally, 55% admitted that technology sometimes creates emotional distance in relationships, as digital interactions often lack the depth and personal touch of face-to- face conversations. Interestingly, 40% of young people expressed a desire to reduce screen time to focus more on real connections. Despite these concerns, 88% of respondents agreed that technology makes it easier to keep relationships across distances and borders. The findings underline a need for balance. While technology offers significant benefits, such as breaking physical barriers and enabling instant communication, it also presents negative effects on society and economy such as cybersecurity costs and job displacement. Encouraging young people to use technology wisely can help. And to get the benefits of technology without losing the personal touch of traditional communication, young people can do the followings: setting screen-time limits, prioritizing real interactions, and choosing deeper conversations over quick texts.

According to the above study, write the missing information:

E)

Circle the correct answer:

Please confirm the details of the agreement ( in writing / in debt ) before we go ahead.

اعرض الحل

الإجابة الصحيحة: أ) in writing

In the book's Unit 6 exercise, 'apply for this job with a letter, not by phone or email' is replaced by the phrase with writing, so in writing. In debt means owing people money, which does not fit confirming an agreement.

Circle the correct answer:

This book is ( on receipt / on sale) for 15% off at the store book and still available.

اعرض الحل

الإجابة الصحيحة: ب) on sale

The book's Unit 6 exercise replaces 'available to buy from next month' with a phrase using sale, so on sale. On receipt is the phrase for paying when you get the goods.

Circle the correct answer:

My brother has just arrived at the airport, at least two hours before (take off / takeoff ).

اعرض الحل

الإجابة الصحيحة: ب) takeoff

The book joins the phrasal verb take off ('leave the ground') into the one-word noun takeoff, used in 'during takeoff and landing'. The noun needs the one-word form after 'before'.

Circle the correct answer:

A strong (marketing / financial market) plan can make a product more popular for customers.

اعرض الحل

الإجابة الصحيحة: أ) marketing

The book defines marketing as a way of letting people know about your product, which is what makes a product more popular. Financial markets are where national currencies are bought and sold.

Circle the correct answer:

They accused me (of / from) cheating on the test, but I had studied hard.

Question Number 4 · LanguageA)

Complete the sentences with the correct tense of the verbs in brackets:

The company ……its financial targets for the third quarter yet. (not / meet)

Complete the sentences with the correct tense of the verbs in brackets:

Complete the sentences with the correct tense of the verbs in brackets:

I ……her immediately although it was dark. (recognize)

B)

Circle the correct answer:

The sky is completely red; it is (going to be / being) a beautiful sunset.

اعرض الحل

الإجابة الصحيحة: أ) going to be

The book uses going to for a prediction based on evidence we can see now, like 'That wall doesn’t look safe. It’s going to fall over one day.' A completely red sky is such evidence, so 'going to be'.

Circle the correct answer:

I can't be sure, but the new policy (could / will ) improve employee satisfaction.

اعرض الحل

الإجابة الصحيحة: أ) could

‘I can’t be sure’ signals only a possibility. The book pairs ‘I can’t be sure’ with ‘will probably’, not plain ‘will’, and uses might, may well and ‘could become addicted’ for what is possible. So ‘could’ fits and ‘will’ is too certain.

Circle the correct answer:

I remember (to tell / telling) him not to do it, but he did it anyway.

اعرض الحل

الإجابة الصحيحة: ب) telling

Remember + -ing is the form for actions that happened in the past, as in the book's 'I remember feeling stressed when I was doing school exams'. Telling him already happened, so 'telling'.

Circle the correct answer:

The client promised (not to be / to not be) late. I hope he'll come soon.

اعرض الحل

الإجابة الصحيحة: أ) not to be

In the book's pattern the infinitive is negative by putting not before to + verb: 'They told us not to spend too long on one task.' So the client promised not to be late.

Circle the correct answer:

You (must / should) be tired. You've been travelling all day.

اعرض الحل

الإجابة الصحيحة: أ) must

The book pairs evidence with must: ‘He’s eating it all, so it must be very tasty’. Travelling all day is the evidence that you are tired, so ‘must be’. Should gives advice, as in the book’s ‘you should always take water’.
