Question Number 1 · Reading ComprehensionA)

Read the text then do the tasks below: Your comfort zone is, as the name suggests, the area where you feel comfortable. We all have one, whether we know it or not: it's the set of routines and known abilities that make us feel safe because we're confident that we can manage and are unlikely to be challenged by anything unexpected or worrying. Obviously, staying inside your comfort zone has many benefits, especially at times when you're feeling under stress. On the other hand, we're often told in 'self-help' books that it's a good idea to do things that are outside our comfort zones. In fact, many studies have shown that an important factor in helping people feel positive about themselves is the feeling that they are developing and making progress in their lives. You won't reach your full potential if you only do what you know you are able to do. We all want to improve ourselves, for example by learning something new, becoming more creative or getting fit. Unfortunately, people often get stuck in their comfort zones and don't feel able to try different things. There are various possible reasons for this. They may be afraid of failing or unsure how to begin. Many people think 'This is the way I am and I'll never change', using this as an excuse for not trying something new. Whatever the reason may be, it's sometimes necessary to force yourself to do something you'd rather not do. Once you've made the effort, though, the door to new experiences will be open and you'll probably wonder why you thought it was a problem.

Question Number 2 · Reading ComprehensionA)

Read the text and do the tasks below: The astonishing incomes earned by football players often surprise many, leading to feelings of frustration among some individuals and motivating questions about the justification of such earnings. While these athletes typically start their careers as amateurs, their great talents move them through trials to eventual success in the professional field. Actually, the big salary-difference between those athletes and other jobs in the society can point to social inequality and disorder in priorities. The reason behind the high salaries of football players can be explained by various factors. Firstly, their outstanding talent and strong loyalty to their craft distinguish them from the average athlete. Many of these players have dedicated years to refining their skills, investing huge hours in training and making sacrifices to do very well in their profession. Secondly, the entertainment industry generates large income from television advertisements and goods sales. Consequently, football clubs must compete for top talent by offering competitive payments, leading to an increase in players' salaries. Thirdly, these athletes often serve as role models and sources of inspiration for millions of fans worldwide, increasing their value to clubs and sponsors. Fourthly, we should recognize the risks athletes have in their careers. Tragic events such as accidents, injuries, and mental health struggles are examples of challenges athletes often face. Therefore, it's reasonable to argue that some athletes deserve high salaries as make up for these injuries. In conclusion, the issue of high salaries for football players is controversial, raising concerns about social problems. So it's necessary to engage in helpful dialogue and look for a fairer distribution of resources.

E)

Circle the correct answer:

(On arrival / On demand) at the hotel, please go to the reception desk.

اعرض الإجابة

الإجابة الصحيحة: أ) On arrival

Circle the correct answer:

Because of economic problems, there aren't as many job (descriptions / opportunities).

اعرض الحل

الإجابة الصحيحة: ب) opportunities

In the book's exercise on phrases made with 'job' (page 51), 'a list of duties involved in his job' is what a job description is, so descriptions cannot mean how many jobs there are. The same exercise has the sentence 'Because of economic problems, there aren't as many chances to get work', and 'job opportunities' is the phrase that means chances to get work.

Circle the correct answer:

A product described as (upmarket / marketing) is a more expensive luxury item

اعرض الحل

الإجابة الصحيحة: أ) upmarket

The book (page 61) defines it: 'A product described as upmarket is a more expensive luxury item.' Marketing is something else in the same exercise: 'a way of letting people know about your product', so it does not describe a product's price level.

Circle the correct answer:

We were spending too much so we've had to introduce some (cutbacks / cut backs).

اعرض الحل

الإجابة الصحيحة: أ) cutbacks

The book's phrasal-verb exercise (page 62) matches 'cut back' with 'reduce spending' and asks you to join each phrasal verb into a one-word noun, with this very sentence: 'We were spending too much so we've had to introduce some ___s.' So the noun is 'cutbacks', one word, not 'cut backs'.

Circle the correct answer:

Luckily, the bus was late leaving, so we were (on time / in time) to catch it.

اعرض الحل

الإجابة الصحيحة: ب) in time

The book's list (page 64) says 'in time' means 'with enough time, not missing something' and 'on time' means 'at the right time'. Its example is exactly this sentence: 'Luckily, the bus was late leaving, so we were in time to catch it.' The bus left late, so they did not miss it: in time.

Question Number 4 · LanguageA)

Complete the sentences with the correct tense of the verbs in brackets:

Look! He…… (try) to see over the top of the wall.

Complete the sentences with the correct tense of the verbs in brackets:

She …… (do) the housework since 7.30 and she hasn't finished yet.

Complete the sentences with the correct tense of the verbs in brackets:

Complete the sentences with the correct tense of the verbs in brackets:

What hobbies …… you ……in regularly? (engage)

Complete the sentences with the correct tense of the verbs in brackets:

Before they joined the match, the players……(train) very well.

B)

Choose the correct answer:

Let's stop (to have / having) a drink; I know a good coffee shop on the corner.

اعرض الحل

الإجابة الصحيحة: أ) to have

The book says stop + to-infinitive means stopping one action in order to do another: 'We were lost, so we stopped to ask the way.' Stopping in order to have a drink is the same pattern, so 'to have'.

Choose the correct answer:

He's very exhausted, so he ( probably won't / will ) go out tonight.

اعرض الحل

الإجابة الصحيحة: أ) probably won't

The book gives 'probably won't' for a likely negative result: 'The company probably won't accept her application since she doesn't have all the required qualifications'. Being exhausted makes going out unlikely, so 'probably won't'.

Choose the correct answer:

After studying for hours, she ( may well /might not) pass the exam tomorrow.

  1. أ

    may well

  2. ب

    might not

Choose the correct answer:

We're (going to have / having ) a staff meeting next Monday, all staff have been told about it.

  1. أ

    going to have

  2. ب

    having

Choose the correct answer:

They were talking on the phone when the power (had gone out/ went out).

اعرض الحل

الإجابة الصحيحة: ب) went out

The book uses past continuous + past simple when one action happens while another is in progress: 'I was talking to an old school friend when she mentioned another person called Jan.' 'Were talking' is in progress, so the power 'went out' (past simple).

C)

⁦Choose the correct answer⁩:

⁦I always remember⁩ ⁦(meeting / to meet)⁩ ⁦her for the first time⁩.

اعرض الحل

الإجابة الصحيحة: أ) meeting

The book says remember + -ing is for remembering past actions: 'I remember feeling stressed when I was doing school exams.' Remembering the first time you met her is a past event, so 'meeting'.

⁦Section B⁩: ⁦(10 points)⁩ يتكون هذا القسم من (ثلاثة) أسئلة وعلى المشترك ان يجيب عن (سؤالين) منها فقط

⁦Choose the correct answer⁩:

⁦You failed your exam. You (⁩⁦should study / should have studied⁩) ⁦harder⁩.

اعرض الحل

الإجابة الصحيحة: ب) should have studied

The book's rule (Grammar reference, page 97): 'To criticise someone's (or your own) past actions or decisions, we use should (not) + have + the past participle', as in 'he should have sent the City captain off'. Failing the exam is already past, so criticising it needs 'should have studied', not 'should study'.

⁦Choose the correct answer⁩:

⁦They told us not⁩ ⁦(to be / being)⁩ ⁦too late⁩.

اعرض الحل

الإجابة الصحيحة: أ) to be

After tell, the book puts an object then the infinitive, with not between them: 'They told us not to spend too long on one task.' So 'told us not to be' is correct, not the -ing form.
